Internet and Intranet Tools and Environments

Deploying Internet and Intranet applications can be a daunting task. By their very nature, a series of diverse technologies must be made to work seemlessly together, or else disaster may strike. LAN and WAN network infrastructure, Operating System and Server hardware, Application and Server software, Database and Content Management systems, not to mention Security and Monitoring tools make up just a portion of the total.

Secure Information Technologies offers professional services covering the entire gamut of Internet and Intranet technologies. As such, we can help you to deploy your solutions with a minimum of surprises and disruptions. True Systems Integrators, we maintain a high level of expertise in deploying all the critical infrastructure involved, including Web Servers, Mail Servers, DNS and DHCP Servers, Multimedia Streaming Servers and Collaboration Servers. We have provided more specific information on each of these areas below.

Web Servers (HTTP / SSL)

Web Servers form the basis for many modern-day application deployments due to the ubiquity of the HTTP client (web browser). However, just because most server platforms are shipped with HTTP services bundled-in, one should not make the mistake of thinking that expert knowledge of these servers is not necessary. Rather, it is a critical requirement for any web-based application deployment.

Over the years, we have worked with many different HTTP (Web) Servers, running on many different Operating Systems, and deploying different technologies. This experience has shown us that the specific mix does indeed make a difference. We have designed, developed and delivered solutions in most of the popular HTTP Server environments, including:

  • Apache
  • Lotus Domino
  • FileMaker Unlimited
  • iPlanet Application Server
  • iPlanet FastTrack Web Server
  • SunOne Web Enterprise Server
  • Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server
  • Microsoft Internet Commerce Server
  • Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)

This experience extends to the most popular Operating System environments, including HP/UX, Linux, Mac OS X, Tru64 UNIX, Windows NT/2000/XP and others.  See our Products - Systems area for more details on these environments.

Electronic Messaging Server (SMTP / POP3 / IMAP4)

Electronic Messaging represents the cornerstone for today's Internet-based collaboration and interactivity. Whether loosely coupled or tightly integrated, no Internet-based project is ever undertaken without some integration with electonic messaging. Due to the importance of electronic messaging, most companies can no longer exist without this service up and running on a 24 x 7 basis.

Secure Information Technologies engineers specialize in complex, and highly available messaging solutions, including:

  • D-Mail
  • SendMail
  • Postfix (Vmailer)
  • Lotus Notes/Domino
  • Microsoft Exchange Server
  • iPlanet/SunOne Message Server

Of course, no modern messaging system can exist without Content Management (Unsolicited Bulk Email filters, Content Monitors and Anti-Virus protection). See our Products - Security area for more details on these technologies.

Domain Name Servers (DNS)

DNS is absolutely critical for all Internet Protocol (IP) applications, yet most of our clients are surprised when we urge them to have a general audit of their Domain Name Servers. DNS is the service that allows one to access a site by its name, as in www.mysite.com and lee@mysite.com. Almost any technical person can put names and addresses in a DNS system, and then everyone seems to think that everything is fine, once the site is accessed by that name. This is, unfortunately, very far from factual. What is factual is that 100% of the client sites we have audited have had serious DNS problems.

An improperly designed DNS system can cause many problems that are hard to see, including:

  • Incorrect Rejection of Emails
  • Slowing system response time
  • Failure of SSL Site Certificates and loss of income
  • Generating unnecessary network traffic and log entires
  • Accidental Sharing of Private / Internal System Information

Properly setting up a DNS "Zone" can be much more tricky than many people believe. We therefore provide comprehensive DNS services for any and all platforms, including:

  • Secure DNS
  • in.named (Solaris)
  • Firewall-Integrated DNS Proxies
    (Firewall-1, Raptor, IPchains & others)
  • Berkley Internet Name Daemon (BIND)
(Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, Tru64 UNIX)
  • Multilevel, partitioned and forwarded DNS
  • DNS System Service (Windows NT / 2000 / XP)

IP Addressing and Dynamic Host Control Protocol Servers (DHCP)

The security and throughput of any Internet Protocol (IP) site depends entirely upon the manner in which IP addresses are allocated and routed. As with DNS, we have found that a high percentage of our customers have implemented systems in an ad-hoc manner, jeopardizing their security, impacting their network throughput, and creating an environment that is difficult to manage efficiently.

Our staff teach IP Design Theory and Router Planning, Configuration and Management courses, so we really know how to help you to put your IP Address issues in order. Our experience in this area includes routing and DHCP servers on platforms including:

  • HP/UX
  • Linux
  • Solaris
  • Mac OS X
  • Tru64 UNIX
  • Cisco Routers
  • Nortel Routers
  • Windows NT / 2000 / XP
  • Firewall Routing Tables
(Firewall-1, Raptor, Gauntlet, IPchains, PIX and others)

Multimedia Streaming Servers

The modern Internet puts rich, multimedia tools in the hands of millions of users, making multimedia streaming services an ever more popular means of catching and keeping attention. From Entertainment to Education, we have assisted clients in sharing multimedia content over the Internet on the following platforms:

  • Windows Media Server
  • QuickTime (Mac OSX)
  • Real Networks RealServer
  • RealOne Helix Universal Server
  • RealOne Helix Universal Gateway

Internet Relay Chat and Collaboration Servers (IRC)

From the time that Marshall McLuhan coined the phrase, "The Global Village", the concept of electronic communities has been part of the general business conscience. The ability to collaborate online, sharing common ideas and interests is a powerful way to build a community around your products and services. Online support and self-help / user-help forums can be a great way to assist your clientele, and to gain valuable feedback.

We have assisted clients in realizing Forum, Chat and Support Desk functions online in a multitude of different environments, including:

  • SiteScape Forum
  • Internet Relay Chat
  • The Palace (Avatar Chat)
  • FootPrints Web Help Desk
